The third round of the season in Aquila Formula 1000, the Nordic region’s leading entry-level formula racing series, was decided during SSK’s race weekend at Sturup Raceway outside Malmö. With temperatures reaching up to 36 degrees, both drivers and equipment were put to the test, with several cars suffering overheating problems during the scorching race weekend. At the same time, three tight races delivered continued drama in the fight for the championship titles.
Already in qualifying, Norway’s Even Hoff Knai showed the way by setting the fastest time, just 0.103 seconds ahead of Andreas Skatteboe. Enzo Cohlin continued his fine form and qualified third, while Mason Bjerring and championship leader Albin Gustafsson rounded out the top five.
The first race brought a close battle, with Albin Gustafsson coming out on top. Gustafsson won by just 0.128 seconds ahead of Hoff Knai, while Enzo Cohlin took third place and was the best junior in RM. Mason Bjerring finished fourth and Carl-Wilhelm Björnemalm fifth, while Andreas Skatteboe did not start.
“Sturup ended up being both better and worse than expected. Unfortunately the heat won on Saturday, so I chose to sit out Race 1. But that made Race 2 much more fun. Working my way up from 14th to a win was fun, but also surprising. Then I edged out a win in Race 3 as well when Albin and Even tangled, but that’s racing,” says Andreas Skatteboe.
On Sunday, however, Skatteboe responded immediately. Having missed the first race, the reigning champion took the win in both Race 2 and Race 3. Both races were also followed by protests that affected the final results. In Race 2, Even Hoff Knai was given a three-second time penalty, while Albin Gustafsson received a three-second time penalty after Race 3. Behind Skatteboe, Albin Gustafsson, Mason Bjerring, Enzo Cohlin and Even Hoff Knai continued to gather crucial points in the tight fight for the top positions.
“Qualifying didn’t go at all as I’d hoped, and I never managed to put together a really good lap, which meant I had to start from fifth on the grid. At the same time, I was very pleased with how I turned the weekend around. I won Race 1 after a good start and several overtakes, while Race 2 and 3 offered plenty of tough fights where it was hard to get past. Unfortunately Race 3 ended with contact and a penalty, but the pace was there all weekend, and that’s what I’m taking forward,” says Albin Gustafsson.
The weekend also brought several important shifts in the championship standings. Albin Gustafsson retains the lead in both the Overall Championship and the Junior RM, but the margin to Even Hoff Knai has shrunk to just four points. Enzo Cohlin continues his strong progress, moving up to third in the Junior RM and fourth overall after two more podium finishes.
In the Rookie Championship, Hoff Knai solidified his lead, while Mason Bjerring strengthened his hold on second place ahead of Carl-Wilhelm Björnemalm. Meanwhile, Andreas Skatteboe continues to top the Senior Championship after his two wins at Sturup Raceway.
Behind the leaders, several drivers continue to make progress. Mason Bjerring recorded his strongest race weekend yet in Aquila Formula 1000 with finishes of fourth, third and third, while Carl-Wilhelm Björnemalm continued his consistent season with three top-six finishes. Julius Gyllin also picked up important points over the weekend and climbed in the Rookie Championship standings.
Aquila Formula 1000 is already back on track this coming weekend for the season’s fourth round, this time at Ring Knutstorp during the Svenskt Sportvagnsmeeting.
