Newsrace Ring Knutstorp 2024

The Nordic Aquila Formula 1000 Series Goes to Ring Knutstorp together with Svenskt Sportvagnsmeeting for Round 4

After three races, Aquila Formula 1000 continues its season with the Svenskt Sportvagnsmeeting, one of Sweden’s largest racing weekends, at Ring Knutstorp in Skåne. A new context for the field in the Nordic region’s premier entry-level series for formula cars.

After nine races, Andreas Skatteboe tops the overall standings. The senior driver has won five races during the year, and comes to Knutstorp with his sights set on extending his lead.

“Knutstorp is a really fun track that is very tricky to be fast on. I think my experience will benefit me a lot in this race, but the others are really fast so it will probably be a really tough fight in the race,” says Andreas Skatteboe.

Behind him, it is even between several drivers. The Östergötland rookie Linus Stjernelund has taken podiums during all races and is second overall, while leading both the Junior RM and the rookie standings. Oscar Mellstig, third overall, is one of several drivers chasing his first victory, but who has shown speed and stability at every round.

“Knutstorp is one of the more difficult tracks – very technical and with many tricky corners. Last year we had problems with the gearbox already in practice and throttle hang in race 3, so this year we hope that the car will hold up all the way and that we can score some good points,” explains Oscar Mellstig.

Linus Stjernelund was also confident, saying, “after a really good last race at Gelleråsen, I feel confident in my ability. At the same time, it was a weekend where I can’t really be completely satisfied – it was the first time I made real mistakes this season, so there are things to take away and learn from. At Knutstorp, speed will be important, as it is not as easy to overtake there. It will be exciting to get started, and I hope to be able to show speed on a new track – and stand at the top of the podium again.”

Other drivers who have shown good form include Fredrik Lindholm, who took his first podium finish last time out at Gelleråsen, and Leonel Skaar, who has advanced in the standings after strong performances in recent weekends.

Albin Gustafsson is another driver with a strong form curve, the consistency in the first half of the season has placed him in the top three in both the junior and rookie championships. Enzo Cohlin was stable throughout the Gellerås weekend and is now fourth in the rookie standings.

The competition at Ring Knutstorp is run as part of the Swedish Sport Car Meeting – one of the highlights of the year in Swedish track racing. Nearly 300 sports cars and historic cars participate during the weekend and the audience is treated to a packed program with competitions in several classes, sports car rallies and open pits.

Aquila Formula 1000 begins the weekend in Skåne with practice on Friday, July 4, followed by qualifying and Race 1 on Saturday. The weekend ends with a double race on Sunday.
