Mantorp Park
If Sweden had an archbishop of motorsports, Mantorp Park would be his cathedral. The 3 km-long circuit southwest of Linköping may be Sweden’s national racing arena, but it is so much more than that.
Mantorp, the northernmost of the 3 “torp” race tracks, hosts several massive motorsport events such as Bug Run, Gatebil and JapDays.
While the track layout itself is quite as spectacular as som eof the other circuits visited by the Championship, what makes this place spcial is that classic “easy to learn, impossible to master” quality it has.
While you fight and wrestle the track itself at other circuits, at Mantorp Park you fight and wrestle yourself. The relatively straightforward layout will constantly measure you, your precision, your ability and your restraint.
Apart from the elusive multi-apex Paris corner, it is a track that you understand pretty much immediately, but can spend an eternity learning to handle perfectly.
And there *is* a spectacular feature – the 600-meter-long straight, that also doubles as drag strip, is iconic.
For a pack of howling Aquilas it is the slipstreaming festival of the season. It seems infinite but where it actually (finally?) ends, the “Mjölby” corner is wide enough for three Aquilas to fit into on every lap.
Many races have been lost and won at the braking and turn in of Mjölby. The moment you realize you will be passed by your opponent, you have to recalibrate and focus on staying as close as possible.
If you’re a few car lengths behind after Mjölby and up the hill to the Crest and the fast nameless left, you will not be close enough to pass in the F2/hairpin or the final corner, “depåkurvan”, and the lap is over.
